Course Description

For learners with some prior knowledge of Mandarin Chinese, this intensive course aims to further develop overall language skills through the discussion of contemporary affairs. The course is suitable for those who have attained an equivalent level of competency in the new Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) Level 3, Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) Level 3, or beyond (B1 - B2). Suggested Learning Hours: 100 - 110 Hours Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to: 1. Read short articles (around 500 Chinese characters) on a variety of topics, with an emphasis on comprehension and interpretation. 2. Write short essays, gradually increasing in length up to 200-350 characters, on assigned topics to improve writing proficiency. 3. Communicate effectively in intermediate-level Chinese, using accurate, clear and fluent sentences in a variety of situations. 4. Understand intermediate-level conversation by native speakers, through guided listening comprehension activities. 5. Expand your vocabulary, mastering 1500 characters, 4316 words, and 357 grammar points (for the new HSK stream); or 1300 characters, 2685 words, 40 affixes, and 390 grammar points (for the TOCFL stream), in addition to previously acquired characters and words. In addition to enhancing your overall language competence in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation, the course also provides insights into Chinese culture and society. Learning outcomes: 1. Speak accurate, clear and fluent sentences. Develop the ability to engage in complex dialogues on special topics according to lessons in the textbook. 2. Enhance listening ability to understand conversations at normal speed carried out by native speakers. 3. Improve reading comprehension through reading short articles (around 1000-1500 Chinese characters) on different topics. 4. Develop writing skills through short essay writing, increasing in length to 500-600 characters. 5. Achieve the new HSK Level 6: 1800 characters, 5456 words, and 424 grammar points; or achieve the TOCFL Level 5: 1900 characters, 5322 words, 69 affixes, and 496 grammar points.
