Course Description

This course is designed for advanced learners of Chinese who have a strong foundation in reading, writing, and speaking the language. Guided Reading in Chinese Literature provides a comprehensive introduction to the most influential and representative works of Chinese literature across different dynasties, genres, and styles. Suggested Learning Hours: 120 - 140 Hours The course covers a range of literary forms, including poetry, essays, novels, and drama, from the classical period to modern times. Through close reading, analysis, and interpretation of selected literary works, students will gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture, history, and aesthetics. Emphasis will be placed on developing critical reading skills, such as identifying literary devices, analyzing themes and motifs, and interpreting cultural and historical contexts. Discussion and reflection on the cultural and social significance of the works will also be encouraged. By the end of the course, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate a deep understanding of the major literary works of Chinese literature and their cultural and historical contexts. 2. Analyze and interpret literary works from various genres and styles using critical reading skills. 3. Identify and analyze literary devices such as symbolism, imagery, and metaphor. Evaluate the cultural and social significance of the works and their relevance to contemporary issues. 4. Communicate effectively in written and oral forms in Chinese, with a focus on literary expression and vocabulary. 5. In addition to reading and analyzing literary works, students will also engage in writing exercises and discussion groups to enhance their language skills and deepen their understanding of the works.
